So bekommen Sie Ihr ELSTER-Zertifikat

  2. Wählen Sie „Für eine Privatperson"

Als Angestellte/r oder Privatperson wählen Sie den Kontotyp „Privatperson" (nicht „Organisation" oder „Unternehmen").

  3. Wählen Sie „Zertifikatsdatei" als Login-Methode

ELSTER bietet mehrere Anmeldeoptionen an (App, Ausweis, Zertifikatsdatei).

How to get your ELSTER certificate

Your digital signature for the tax office - free, one-time, a few simple steps

✍️ Your ELSTER certificate is essentially your electronic signature for the tax office. It confirms a tax return genuinely came from you - the same way a signature on paper would. It's issued by the tax authority itself, not by SimplyTax, and it's completely free.
⏱️ Plan for 5-10 days
Part of the confirmation arrives by post - that usually takes 5 to 10 days. That's the only reason it isn't ready instantly. Good to know: you can fill in everything at SimplyTax right now, and even pay - you can add your certificate any time before you actually submit.

Getting your certificate

  1. Go to elster.de

Open elster.de ↗, Germany's official tax portal, and click "Benutzerkonto erstellen" (Create user account).

  2. Choose "For a private individual"

As an employee or private individual, choose the account type "Privatperson" (not "Organisation" or "Unternehmen").

  3. Choose "Zertifikatsdatei" as the login method

ELSTER offers several login options (app, ID card, certificate file). Explicitly choose "Zertifikatsdatei" (certificate file) - that's the only option downloadable as a file you can upload to SimplyTax.

  4. Enter your personal details

    Have these ready:

    • Tax identification number (Steuer-ID, 11 digits)
    • Date of birth
    • Email address
    • A username of your choice
  5. Confirm your email

You'll get an email right away with a confirmation code or link. Open it to verify your email address.

  6. Wait for two codes

Now comes the part that needs a little patience - ELSTER sends you two separate codes:

    • Activation ID - by email, usually within minutes
    • Activation code - by post, usually 5-10 days

This is a deliberate security step by the tax authority - it makes sure the certificate genuinely goes to your real registered address.

  7. Create and download the certificate

Once you have both codes, go back to elster.de and complete the registration. At this point:

    • Set a secure password
    • Download the certificate file (file extension .pfx)
⚠️ Keep that password safe
This password cannot be reset. If you lose it, you'll need to request an entirely new certificate - postal wait included. Write it down somewhere safe.

Uploading it to SimplyTax

  1. Open Settings

Log in to SimplyTax and click "Settings" at the top.

  2. Set up your digital signature

Scroll to the "Digital signature (ELSTER certificate)" section and click "Set up my digital signature".

  3. Enter the file and password

Select your downloaded .pfx file, enter your password, and save. Done - your certificate is now on file.

🔒 Stored securely
Your certificate file is stored encrypted on our servers. Your password is never saved - you'll only enter it again once, at the actual moment of submission.
